BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic is a not-for-profit
corporation, incorporated in the Province of Ontario and funded by
Legal Aid Ontario. As such, it is governed by a volunteer board of
directors.

Board Function

The Board of the Clinic is a 9-person Board which operates primarily
as a policy board. The Board hires the Executive Director and
participates in the hiring of the staff lawyers. The Board is not
involved in the day-to-day operations of the clinic, although it
supervises the work of the Executive Director and is available to
support and advise the director should any problems arise.

Make Up of Board

The Board, which acts as a liaison between the various communities
and the Clinic, includes people from different backgrounds and
different groups. These people and groups represent the
Francophone and Anglophone communities as well as the growing
immigrant community.

Board Meetings & Planning

Since the Clinic is bilingual, all Board members must be able to
understand English and French. In general, board meetings are
conducted in French, although members can communicate in either
French or English. Board minutes are recorded in French.

Planning for clinic priorities is a very important part of the Board's
work. Establishing a mission statement, working through strategic
planning, setting goals and evaluating outcomes are all part of the
Board's work. To that end a special planning event is held once a
year. In addition, there are ten working meetings during the year,
held on the fourth Monday of the month. There is no formal meeting
in July or December. However, the Board and staff get together for a
Christmas celebration. The Clinic holds its Annual General Meeting
the third Wednesday of September.

The Committees

The Board includes the following standing committees:
Executive Committee
Membership and Recruitment Committee

These Committees meet as needed. The Board meetings and the Committee meetings are fairly informal with a good amount of
respectful discussion.

If you would like further information about the Board, please contact
Board President, Philip West at 519-915-7605 or Jessie Iwasiw, the
Executive Director of the clinic at 253-3526 ext. 22.

MEMBERSHIP

Our members are greatly valued by the clinic. They keep us in touch
with attitudes and resources in the community, with French
language needs and they encourage us in our work. They also form
a pool of individuals who can sit on our Board. There is a nominal
fee of $2 to join the Clinic and a member receives our newsletter, an
invitation to the Annual General Meeting and occasional flyers.

VOLUNTEERS

Our clinic also values the contributions of volunteers.  The fall and
winter semesters we try to have a University of Windsor student
working with us as a volunteer.
